Test our network before you order

Whether game server, web hosting or root server: what matters is how fast your users reach our network. With the Looking Glass you measure it yourself, straight from our data center in Frankfurt and in the opposite direction from your own computer.

Four ways to check our network

Looking Glass

Ping, traceroute and MTR from our network in Frankfurt to your IP address or domain, over IPv4 or IPv6. The result appears right in your browser.

Open Looking Glass

Ping from your computer

Ping our test point lg.kernelhost.com from your computer and see the latency in your direction, without any extra software.

Check the route

Traceroute and MTR show every hop between your connection and our network, so you can see where delays come from.

Ping over IPv6 ping -6 lg.kernelhost.com
Traceroute on Windows tracert lg.kernelhost.com
MTR on Linux and macOS mtr lg.kernelhost.com

How to read the results

Three values tell you the most important things about a connection.

Latency

The round-trip time of a packet in milliseconds. The lower, the better. Strongly fluctuating values point to a busy line or Wi-Fi.

Packet loss

Should be 0 % at the destination. Loss at single hops along the way is usually harmless, because many routers deliberately answer ping requests with lower priority.

Download

The speed test shows what your line achieves from Frankfurt. Less than you pay for is often caused by Wi-Fi, the router or parallel downloads in your own network.

Where the tests run

The test point is located in the TÜV TIER3+ certified data center in Frankfurt am Main, in the same network as our servers there. The values therefore show the connectivity your server in Frankfurt gets with us.

Frequently asked questions about the test server

Does the test cost anything?

No. Looking Glass, ping and speed test are free and work without sign-up. To keep the service fast for everyone, the number of requests per IP address is limited.

What is a Looking Glass?

A Looking Glass is a measuring tool inside a provider's network. It runs ping, traceroute or MTR from there to a target of your choice and shows how well the data center reaches your network.

What latency is good?

For online games and voice services, values below 50 ms count as very good. From Germany and its neighboring countries most connections reach Frankfurt much faster, because the DE-CIX internet exchange is right on site.

Why is my speed test slower than my plan?

Common reasons are Wi-Fi instead of a cable, a busy router, parallel downloads in your home network or bottlenecks at your own internet provider. Test over a cable and without other downloads for the best result.

Is the Minecraft and TeamSpeak test server still available?

No, the former test server with Minecraft, TeamSpeak and a test website has been shut down. You now measure latency and routing to our network with the Looking Glass and by pinging lg.kernelhost.com.

Do the values also apply to servers at other locations?

No, the test point is in Frankfurt. Servers at our other locations worldwide are connected through the networks on site. We are happy to advise you on these locations via ticket.

Does the connection fit?

Then choose the right server: PrePaid, no minimum term and with 3.2 Tbps DDoS protection included.
