Every Storage Server is reachable through nine transfer protocols: FTP, FTPS, SFTP, SCP, Samba/CIFS, WebDAV, WebDAVs, BorgBackup and rsync. That makes it straightforward to mount the storage from Linux and Windows servers, NAS devices, backup tools (Veeam, Restic, Duplicati, Plesk Backup) or end-user machines, without any extra gateway software.
You can take up to 10 manual snapshots at any time. On top of that, daily, weekly and monthly snapshots are created automatically, so you can roll back files that were accidentally overwritten or encrypted by ransomware. Sub-accounts let you create multiple separate logins, ideal for resellers, teams or several projects sharing a single Storage Server.
Typical use cases include off-site server backups (with BorgBackup, Restic, rsync or Veeam), external backups for shared hosting and Plesk servers, media and archive storage, software repositories, game-server backups and shared file storage for small teams. Because the storage sits outside your production server, your backups stay reachable even if the main system goes down completely.

What is a Storage Server?
A Storage Server is dedicated cloud storage with a fixed monthly capacity (1, 5, 10 or 20 TB) that you mount through classic protocols like FTP, SFTP, Samba/CIFS and WebDAV. It also natively supports specialised backup tooling such as BorgBackup and rsync. That makes it ideal for keeping server backups, hosting backups or large data archives safely off-site, away from your production system.
Which protocols does the Storage Server support?
FTP, FTPS, SFTP, SCP, Samba/CIFS, WebDAV, WebDAVs, BorgBackup and rsync. You can mount the storage as a network drive on Windows and macOS, sync to it from Linux scripts via rsync, or write deduplicated, encrypted backups with BorgBackup, all on the same account.
Are snapshots really included?
Yes. You can take up to 10 manual snapshots at any time. In addition, daily, weekly and monthly snapshots are created automatically. That means you can roll files back to an earlier version within seconds after an accidental deletion or a ransomware attack, at no extra cost.
Can I create multiple logins (sub-accounts)?
Yes. Each Storage Server supports several sub-accounts with their own logins. That is useful for teams, resellers, or when you want to keep different projects strictly separated without buying multiple Storage Servers.
Where is my data hosted?
Every Storage Server runs in a datacenter in Germany (Europe), GDPR-compliant, with redundant network connectivity and 99.99% availability under our terms. For encrypted transfers, use SFTP, FTPS or WebDAVs. If you want your data stored encrypted, use the built-in encryption of BorgBackup, for example.
Is there a setup fee or minimum term?
No. Like every other KernelHost product, the Storage Server is 100% PrePaid. No setup fee, no minimum term, no notice period. You pay monthly in advance and can stop at any time.
Can I use the Storage Server as a network drive or file server, also via NFS?
Yes, as a network drive and file server: on Windows you map the Storage Server as a network drive via SMB/CIFS, on macOS through Finder (SMB) and on Linux with mount.cifs or SSHFS. Several computers and servers can access it at the same time, ideal as a NAS alternative without your own hardware. NFS is not offered; for Linux servers, SMB/CIFS, SSHFS or rsync are the right alternatives.
Is the Storage Server suitable as backup storage for my servers?
Yes. The Storage Server is an external backup target for KVM root servers, dedicated servers and web hosting, for example via BorgBackup, restic or rsync over SFTP. The backup is stored separately from your server, so a server outage does not affect it. The automatic snapshots also let you restore older versions.
